Cytoplasmic Male Sterility in Wheat Hybrid Breeding: Advances, Mechanisms and Applications

ABSTRACT
Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) sustains more than one-third of the world's population, yet its self-pollinating floral biology has restricted the commercial exploitation of heterosis. Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) remains the most robust genetic platform for producing hybrid wheat seed. This review integrates classical breeding progress with recent molecular insights into T. timopheevii- (T-), Aegilops kotschyi- (K-) and Ae. crassa- (D-) based CMS systems, the discovery of the chimeric mitochondrial gene orf279 and its nuclear restorers Rf1 and Rf3, and emerging CRISPR-mediated male-sterility platforms such as Ms1 knockout. Applications in three-line and two-line hybrid pipelines, current adoption bottlenecks and future directions in genomic selection, pentatricopeptide-repeat engineering and climate-resilient hybrid design are discussed to guide the next generation of hybrid wheat cultivars.
